Currently in Tanzania and other East African countries, when a young woman is pregnant or suspected of being pregnant she is kicked out of school and not allowed to return. For a lot of these women it does not only mean losing access to education, but can also result in them losing housing and employment opportunities. Our organization is aimed at providing a home for these girls to go to, not only for shelter but support.

M.A.R.B.L.E will provide housing to 10-14 girls at a time and has partnered with a local vocational school to provide vocational training as well. While living at M.A.R.B.L.E each girl will have access to food and shelter, vocational training, health care, case management, employment opportunities, and mentorship.

The name M.A.R.B.L.E stands for “miracles are real because love exists”. This name was created in the early 2000’s when our founder, Paeten, moved away from her grandparents in Nevada, Missouri. Every time Paeten would visit her grandmother she would hide marbles for her to find and told her that every time she found one it was Paeten’s way of saying “I love you”.

In June of 2017 Paeten traveled to Tanzania to intern at a legal NGO, Tanzania Women Lawyer’s Association, where she learned about the laws preventing young mothers from attending school. While at “TAWLA” she also saw first hand how many young mothers were left without resources due to their pregnancy. So after returning from Tanzania, Paeten and the Board of Directors worked on incorporating M.A.R.B.L.E, getting 501c3 status, and creating this mission.

In addition, The Faraja Young Women Development Organization, a vocational school providing training for pregnant teens and young mothers in Arusha, Tanzania has partnered with M.A.R.B.L.E to take over housing, clothing, and case management for the Faraja center.

M.A.R.B.L.E is not just an organization aimed at helping young mothers in Tanzania, but is also our way of “hiding a marble” to remind people that love does exist.
