Funding Goal: $10,000

Help inspire kids (from low-income communities) to choose an apple over a bag of chips (or a rainbow couscous salad over cheesy pasta).  $10,000 would fund an entire year’s worth of nutrition and cooking classes at a Title One school in Marin County. Support Kids Cooking For Life, a pinch of learning and a dash of fun!

Kids Cooking For Life teaches nutrition through hands on cooking to students from low income communities. Research shows that the foundation for a healthy life begins in childhood, as a balanced diet provides the essential nutrients for healthy development and growth. In contrast, inadequate nutrient intake is associated with obesity and chronic diseases during adolescence and adulthood as well as poor academic behavior and performance A healthy, balanced diet improves brain capacity, maximizes cognitive capabilities, and improves academic performance in school-age children. KCL strives to afford each child an equal chance to succeed academically, especially in the low income communities that we serve.

With funds from 100EW, KCL will teach back-to-back after school classes at Laurel Dell Elementary School in Marin County, CA. This school is in the Canal neighborhood of San Rafael. Most of San Rafael’s low-income residents, mainly immigrants (documented and undocumented) from a variety of countries, live in the Canal Area. Seventy percent are Hispanic, 11 percent Asian, 10 percent Caucasian, 5 percent African-American and 4 percent other.
