The new Community Center will house the Independence Public Library, classroom space for an after-school youth center, the Independence Food Pantry, a demonstration-style kitchen, and a community gathering space. The layout was thoughtfully designed to allow for flexible use for a variety of social gatherings and educational opportunities. The new library space will contain a fully equipped videoconferencing room for local residents to use for things like telehealth, job interviews, connecting with Medicare and Social Security consultations, counseling appointments, video chatting with family far away, or online classes.

Our current estimates for construction include approximately $300,000 for site prep, extending utility lines, surveying, code review, and civil engineering. We anticipate other engineering costs, architecture costs, building materials, labor, and construction costs to cost an additional $3,800,000. We anticipate approximately $50,000 more in broadband infrastructure, computers, and other technology costs. Looking at similarly, recently built libraries and community centers, we expect furniture costs of approximately $275,000. To reduce ongoing costs, the Library plans to install solar panels and a backup battery to cover our complete energy needs at an upfront cost of approximately $150,000. The Library Board has set a fundraising goal of $530,000 to cover expenses that can not be paid for with the grant.
